Watchable Wildlife

Arizona is a wildlife watcher’s heaven.  Thanks to an amazingly diverse topography, which ranges from the lower Sonoran Desert to grassy mountain meadows, flora and fauna thrive in the six “biodiversity zones”—unique groupings of plants and animals based on elevation.  For every 1,000 feet gain in elevation the temperature drops three degrees Fahrenheit and the precipitation increases.  Arizona’s six biodiversity zones span a low point of 70 feet near Yuma to a high of 12,670 feet in the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff.  As a result of the diverse landscape, Arizona can lay claim to close to 900 vertebrate species of wildlife, more than any other inland state!  And the state’s wide open spaces of public land supply plenty of places for viewing.

We are very close to the Kaibab National Forest and the Prescott National Forest.  A U.S. Forrest Service brochure states that “Rocky Mountain mule deer are found throughout Kaibab and Prescott National Forests.  Other big game animals such as white-tailed deer, elk, antelope, javelina, and black bear are also forest dwellers.  Furbearers include weasel, mink, beaver, fox, raccoon, and badger.  Small game animals are Albert and gray squirrels, cottontail, and jack rabbits.  Game birds represented are the wild turkey, band-tailed pigeon, dove, quail, and waterfowl. The forests are also home to several threatened or endangered species including the bald eagle.”

The Arizona Game and Fish Department helps bird and wildlife watchers with information , training, tips, and locations of wildlife viewing areas around the state.  They have partnered with several other agencies and organizations to publish the Arizona Wildlife Viewing Guide, which highlights 90 sites throughout Arizona with detailed information as to where, when, and how to enjoy the wildlife.
